If you want to take a faster less time consuming route find a dress of which you like the basic shape. Use a seam ripper to disassemble the dress. Once you have the dress in its raw unsewn parts you can use it as a pattern to follow. You can add length by cutting your fabric several inches lower than the original dress or make it shorter by cutting your fabric shorter than the original. Or you could start with a very basic dress pattern and add to that.
